An Extract of the Ministers' Speech

“Thank you for inviting me to join you at lunch today.  It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to get together with members of the Australian Road Federation.

The Bracks Government is committed to strengthening Victoria’s transport, ports and major projects infrastructure.  And we are committed to providing road and rail networks that are integrated and sustainable, and to providing transport infrastructure that operates efficiently and effectively.

In many ways, you share these goals with us.

And I thank you for your contribution to the progress we have made so far in delivering a safe transport network that best supports the economic, social and environmental needs of Victorians.

But don’t for a moment think that this is an easy task.

Right now in Victoria, we face some critical challenges in our road and freight systems.  Challenges that have the potential to seriously impact on Victoria’s solid economic growth.

In particular I’m talking about the problem of congestion on our urban road networks - and a bottleneck in Melbourne’s port - that together could easily slow our economic growth.

Today I want to briefly outline the nature and extent of these problems and the solutions we have developed to combat them.”

A full transcript of the Ministers’ speech is available on the ARF members site.
