Queensland engineer recipient of 2007 IRF Fellowship

ARF nominee Gavin Soward has won a prestigious International Road Federation (IRF) Fellowship for 2007.

Gavin, 34, is Principal Engineer, Road Surfacings with the Queensland Department of Main Roads. He is believed to be the first Australian to win an IRF Fellowship in some 20 years.

In putting Gavin’s name forward, the selection committee and the QDMR’s Chief Engineer described him as “an extremely competent engineer who is on track for a distinguished career in transport infrastructure”.

Mr Soward says he is delighted to be a recipient of the Fellowship, which will see him undertake 12 months of study at university in Florida from August this year.

During his time in the US, he will also participate in the IRS executive training course in Washington, and hopefully find time to visit the National Centre for Asphalt Technology in Alabama.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity to study, and meet and work with colleagues from around the world,” he says.

Mr Soward hopes to use the Fellowship to pursue business studies and research into long-life asphalt pavements.
