The Victorian Government’s new SmartRoads initiative is a positive step towards alleviating Melbourne’s congestion problems.
The roads industry has long advocated the need to ‘sweat’ the asset - to make our existing road network work harder and smarter. The congestion problem can’t be solved with new roads alone.
The challenge for the community is to adapt to the inevitable changes to the way we access our roads. Not everyone will be happy, but the government needs to be given credit for pursuing the greater good.
That also applies in the current stand-off over clearways.
