Message from the Council
Dear Fellows,

It is with great pleasure that we welcome 2017 Fellow Brendan Hoyle as the interim Council member ahead of the next term nominations being offered later this year. Brendan is a member of a Digital Program Board, an Innovation Council, and steering group for the Roads Australia Journey Reliability Chapter. This brings an exciting dynamic to the existing Fellowship Council, both geographically as our first Queensland member, as well as his strong customer focus viewed through the lens of new and emerging technologies. Thank you to all nominees for the interim position – it was a passionate and talented group and we encourage everyone interested in representing our industry on the Fellowship Council for the next term to consider applying later this year.

The Mid-Year Workshop held in May focused on building the leadership capabilities of our 2018 Fellows through a series of interactive sessions and discussions with government and industry executives. The Fellows are well-equipped for their end-of-year project ‘board pitch’ following Mariette Rups-Donnelly’s energetic and enlightening presentation skills class. Melanie Bois’ interactive session outlined the fundamentals for building high performing teams and the integral role of a leader in that process. Panellists Brendan Lyon, Partner, KPMG; Shalendra Ranasinghe, Director Commercial Services, Roads and Maritime Services; and Norm McIlfatrick, Executive Director Policy, Roads Australia delivered a lively and insightful discussion about leadership and effective government relations, while outgoing CEO Ian Webb shared his secrets to success (or life lessons through making mistakes). The Fellows have delivered their project scoping papers and will commence work on the final reports now feedback has been delivered.

While we continue to have strong representation at our Young Professionals events, we encourage all Fellows to work with your member organisations to help promote the forums and facilitate attendance for our industry’s rising stars, to build the capacity and capability in our pipeline of future leaders. The next Young Professionals event will be held in Brisbane on Wednesday 1 August, with Graeme Newton. We look forward to seeing you there.

Anna Andrews,
Fellowship Deputy Chapter Chair

Welcome

Register Now - Young Professionals Event Brisbane - 1 August

Join us for our first Young Professionals event in Brisbane for 2018 on 1 August
- talking on the complexities of delivering a major project. We encourage Fellows to support the YP network by attending and encouraging YP attendance within their own organisations.

This event will provide some insight in to major projects drawing on examples from one of Queensland's biggest - Cross River Rail. The discussion will take place from three angles: procurement from the client side, design challenges from the consultant side, as well as what goes in to stakeholder engagement and communication with the community.

Our guest speakers will include Graeme Newton, CEO, and Russ Vine, Executive Director, Marketing & Communications at the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority. Click here to register.

Mid-year workshop wrap-up

2018 Fellows recently attended the mid-year workshop, bringing all Fellows in to Sydney for 2 days of activities including leadership development, panel discussions and interactive group bonding activities. Melanie Bois got Fellows engaged in an activity to look at driving performance, leading teams and setting goals. We also had the pleasure of hearing from Shalendra Ranasighe, Brendan Lyon and Norm McIlfatrick on some of the intricacies of Government and how to be an effective and influential leader in a politically sensitive environment. Fellows also got to hear from Mariette Rups-Donnelly on how to present themselves, and information, in preparation for their project presentations in November. Thanks again to John Holland Group for supporting another talented group of Fellows.

Young Professionals Event – 23 May
We held yet another successful Young Professionals event in Sydney on Wednesday 23 May. Bob Higgins (RMS) and Sarah Stante (Seed Engineering) spoke on all things Crisis Management - including how to prevent a crisis. We hope the Fellows will continue to support us in building our next generation of leaders by encouraging the growth of our YP network. For more information click here.

Fellows Present at 2018 Regional Conference

The Roads Australia – IRF Regional Conference for Asia and Australasia has come and gone, and we’d like to take the opportunity of thanking all our sponsors, members, international guest speakers and stakeholders who contributed to making this year’s summit one of our best ever.

We are pleased to have welcomed two Fellows, Dalia Dakkan, Amey and Natalie Lockwood, Austroads to present on Day 2 of the Conference on Asset Management and Roadworker Safety respectively.

The John Shaw Dinner was once again the social highlight of the two-day conference, with over 700 in attendance at the Sydney Town Hall to congratulate internationally recognised infrastructure and dispute resolution lawyer, Doug Jones, on being awarded the industry’s top honour.
