Message from the Council
Dear Fellows,

As the “New kid on the Fellows Council block”, I wanted to take this opportunity to:

1. Outline my somewhat obvious impeccable taste in music to you all – (Referencing “New kids on the block” in the first line of my first email to you all); and more seriously

2. Let you know that there is work going on behind the scenes to make the Fellows and Young professionals programs better year after year.

Since joining the Council just months ago, I have been a part of some great events held in my part of the world.  The Young Professionals event in Brisbane in August was particularly well received with Graeme Newton, Russ Vine, and Alex de Aboitiz all outlining their unqiue take on leadership, and also the Fellows site visit to the 42km long Toowoomba Second Range Crossing. As such an important piece of the infrastructure puzzle in Queensland, it was great to see the work first hand.

So, the question I will be addressing moving forward is: How is the Council making this program better for future fellows?  For now, we are focusing on continuing to improve what sets this program apart from others in industry.  We are lucky enough to be able to build on something quite unique (the CEO level individual mentoring), and hope to expand our other leadership engagement activities to ensure Fellows, past and present, get the best our of the Program and Roads Australia network.
I look forward to hearing your feedback as we continue to work on this throughout 2019.
Brendan Hoyle,
Fellows Council

The RA Fellows are delighted to host Duncan Gay, former NSW Roads Minister, recently announced Chair of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator and Executive Advisor of MU Group. Duncan will share lessons from his time in senior leadership roles, including what it takes to be responsible for delivering the largest infrastructure spend in the State's history.

Hosted by

Duncan Gay served as the NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight from March 2011 to January 2017. In this time, Duncan played an instrumental role in helping to develop, manage and deliver the largest infrastructure investment and construction program in Australia. More than $38 billion was invested in road, waterway and freight infrastructure in NSW – the largest investment in the state’s history.

He was directly responsible for the government agencies of Roads and Maritime Services, NSW Centre for Road Safety and Ports Authority of NSW and he shared joint responsibility of Transport for NSW.

Duncan was first elected as a member of the NSW Legislative Council in March 1988. Prior to his life as a politician, he was the owner of a small trucking company and the manager of his family’s grazing property at Crookwell.

Since leaving Parliament in July 2017, Duncan was invited to join the board of MU Group as an Executive Advisor, and recently took up a position as an Executive Advisor to Citrus Group. He is also a Mentor in the 2018 Fellowship Program.

Fellows TSRC Site Visit

RA’s 2018 Queensland Fellows have recently got ‘up close and personal’ with one of the State’s largest and highest priority road projects - the $1.6 billion Toowoomba Second Range Crossing (TSRC).

The August site visit was organised by 2018 Mentor and ACCIONA Engineering Director, Christophe Kowalczyk, and supported by TSRC Project Director Mike Millar. Mike is part of the Nexus Delivery team, a JV between ACCIONA Infrastructure Australia and Ferrovial Agroman, responsible for the project’s design and construction for the successful bidder, Nexus Infrastructure.

Over two days, our Queensland Fellows participated in a detailed project briefing, leadership discussions, a young professionals session with on-site engineers, and viewings of multiple sections of the 41km route, including the 800m long viaduct bridge.

When complete, the TSRC will improve road and driver safety, reduce travel time across the Toowoomba range by up to 40 minutes for heavy commercial vehicles, and relieve pressure on local roads by redirecting trucks away from Toowoomba’s CBD.

A huge thanks to ACCIONA for going above and beyond to create this wonderful opportunity for the leaders of tomorrow.

If you or someone you know is interested in hosting a Fellows site visit in 2019, please contact Hannah Sauvarin at RA.
