Message from the Council

Fellows,

I am sure you’ve all been back at work for some time now and the holiday break is a distant memory but nonetheless, welcome to 2019 and what we expect to be another successful year for the RA Fellowship and also the young professionals of our industry.

With a Fellowship of 140 people now engaged, we will continue our focus on ensuring the leadership development and long-term engagement of our Fellows continues to strengthen.  We are also excited to engage with a diverse and energetic industry of young professionals who will very soon form the next cohort of Fellows.

We look forward to working with Chair Ross Campbell and Deputy Chair Anna Andrews this year, expanding our leadership engagement activities to ensure Fellows, past and present, get the best out of the Program and Roads Australia network.

While we continue to have strong representation at our Young Professionals events, we encourage all Fellows to work with your member organisations to help promote the forums and facilitate attendance for our industry’s rising stars, to build the capacity and capability in our pipeline of future leaders. The next Young Professionals event will be held in Brisbane in April (details below). We look forward to seeing you there.

A big thank you to John Holland who have backed the Fellowship Program again this year. We thank them for their ongoing support.

Natalie Lockwood

Young Professionals Segment

Young Professionals Session in Brisbane - SAVE THE DATE

The first YP event for 2019 will be held in Brisbane on 30 April and hosted by CPB. This will be a panel session on ‘Lessons learned the hard way – what they wish they knew’ which will bring together leaders in construction to talk about times they wish they could press rewind on, and what advice they give to YPs.

2019 RA Transport Summit
RA is pleased to launch the new Young Professionals Conference Rate for our upcoming Transport Summit in Sydney on 30 & 31 May. We strongly encourage you to promote this among your own YPs to help develop our future leaders and encourage diversity at industry events.

Don’t forget 2019 Fellows can attend the Summit for free – just email Rachael.
Transport Summit Young Professionals Session  - 31 May
Not only is RA launching a new rate for YPs to attend the Summit, we will be holding a session dedicated to YPs and being run by Fellows. We will be kicking off with a panel session on Understanding what the client needs – not just what they want followed by a breakout session on BD101 and how YPs can start to engage with external stakeholders more effectively and add more value to their business.

If you would like to help run the session, please contact Hannah.

Calling for YP Mentors
RA is kicking off group mentoring for Young Professionals in 2019 with Fellows taking the mentor hot-seat. Not only does this allow Fellows to pass on some of the tips learned from their mentor, but it also allows you to stay engaged in the Fellowship Alumni and pass on the leadership baton.

If you are interested in being a group mentor please contact Hannah.

State-based Casual Meetup
This year your local Fellowship Council members will be arranging quarterly casual Fellowship meetups. They will use this as an opportunity to let you know about RA activity and any Fellowship Alumni information, so we encourage you to attend where possible. Please keep an eye out for invites.
