Message from the Council

Dear Fellows,
As 2019 draws to a close and many of us are looking forward to a well-deserved break, the Fellowship Council is reflecting on the past 12 months, along with what’s ahead in 2020.
Our outgoing Chair Ross Campbell welcomed myself and Jill Boag into the roles of Chair and Deputy Chair at November’s 2019 graduation and 2020 induction. It’s a real privilege to be selected to represent the broader Fellowship on the Council and Jill and I are very grateful for the opportunity to guide the program in building a diverse, inclusive and sustainable pipeline of leadership talent across the industry – from our young professionals through to the up and coming executives within the Fellowship.
Ross has been an influential sponsor of the diversity agenda throughout the Fellowship and YP programs, as well as supporting the broader Roads Australia Policy streams to ensure we weave this into the social fabric of our industry at all levels. His vision is reflected in the Council achieving strong female representation, including Jill and I being the first all-female Chair and Deputy. We also continue to make significant improvements on the broader gender balance across each year’s Fellowship applications, intake, and mentors including doubling the number of female mentors for 2020.
Since inception of the YP program, we have had more than 2,750 attendees at events and in 2020 we plan to grow the network and mentoring opportunities, provide more technical and site visit opportunities, and grow the YP representation at the Transport Summit.
Ross will remain on the Council as immediate outgoing Chair for the remaining term of the existing Councillors, with nominations re-opening late next year. Thank you Ross for your continued focus on diversity and growing capability among the industry’s next generation. Congratulations on your achievements and we look forward to building on your strong legacy.
The Council will hold a strategy session early in the new year to determine our plan for 2020 and will continue to identify opportunities for Fellows to become involved in the Policy stream priorities. If you are keen to get involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Marlie, who can put you in touch with the Policy Chair or Deputy as appropriate.
On behalf of the Fellowship Council, wishing everyone a very happy and safe holiday period surrounded by your nearest and dearest.

Anna Andrews
Fellowship Chair

Message from the 2018 PPP Award Winner

I would like to kindly thank Roads Australia for such an exciting and eye-opening 12 months. This year I had the opportunity to shadow the RA team, attend a large majority of the year’s events and also really challenge myself by presenting (a lot) of speeches. However, the opportunities to connect with people have by far been the best part of this experience. I have a better understanding and appreciation of what goes on behind the scenes for the Fellowship Program by shadowing the Fellowship Council. I had fantastic stroke of luck by being adopted by Fellowship Group 2 and I thoroughly enjoyed contributing to a topic that I’m passionate about. I also would like to thank all the 2019 and past Fellows who I have met this year, for all knowledge shared, all the new role models I now have but also making the token young professional feel welcomed at many events throughout this year. I look forward to seeing you at future Alumni events!

Calling for YP Mentors
RA is continuing the group mentoring for Young Professionals in 2020 following a successful launch in 2019. This involves Fellows taking the mentor hot-seat, allowing Fellows to pass on some of the tips learned from their mentor, but it also allows you to stay engaged in the Fellowship Alumni and pass on the leadership baton.
