Integrated Transport Benefits from NSW Budget Boost

17 November 2020  -  Roads Australia (RA), the peak body for roads within an integrated transport system has welcomed the significant investments made in transport infrastructure as part of today’s NSW State Budget.

Today’s announcements underscore the important role which the delivery of transport infrastructure will play in sustaining our post-COVID economic recovery,” said RA President Michael Bushby.

“The NSW Government’s decision to invest in a range of projects that will enhance the integration of the state’s transport network is especially important for continued economic development and maintaining community amenity for residents.

“The investments announced in major road infrastructure – especially the $1.3 billion to support delivery of the final stage of WestConnex and $4.2 billion over four years to commence construction of Sydney Gateway project and planning and preconstruction activities for the M6 Stage 1 Extension – will help to deliver a more efficient road network for the nation’s largest city.

“Likewise, the investments announced in road infrastructure across regional NSW will be important in supporting regional road safety, regional development opportunities and more efficient freight transport across the state. RA particularly welcomes the $312 million in accelerated funding for the Fixing Local Roads program and the additional $108 million for the Fixing Country Bridges program

“The substantial investments in public transport services – including $28 billion over four years to progress delivery of the Sydney Metro – will make a major contribution to alleviating road congestion and enhancing connections for all transport users.

“RA especially welcomes the significant $1.6 billion package for bus services throughout NSW, Buses play a vital role in integrated transport systems and this investment will help to ensure commuters across the state have access to modern fleets servicing the routes they need.

“As the COVID pandemic continues, it is more important than ever for industry and governments to work together and ensure projects are delivered in a way that maximises benefits to the community and enables industry to get the best use of its capital and people.

“RA will continue to work with the NSW Government to pursue the recommendations contained in RA’s recent Procurement Reform Report so that the intended benefits of infrastructure projects are fully realised
