OUR SPEAKER

Carol-Anne Nelson, Deputy Secretary, Regional and Outer Metropolitan, Transport for NSW

Carol-Anne Nelson is the Deputy Secretary for the Regional and Outer Metropolitan (ROM) Division at Transport for NSW. In this role, she brings a holistic view to the delivery of regional transport, leading more than 4,300 employees charged with making regional NSW a better place to live, work and visit.

Working from more than 180 locations, her employees are responsible for an integrated transport service that comprises: more than 20,000 kilometres of road; 5,000 bridges; a regional train network carrying 43m passengers annually; and the community transport and bus services that link people and services across regional NSW. Prior to joining Transport for NSW in March 2020, Carol-Anne had an extensive career in the transport, energy and infrastructure sectors, having spent time at both Queensland Rail leading operations across the state networks, and at V/Line in Victoria; where as Chief Operating Officer, she oversaw a 45 per cent growth in patronage in four years. Carol-Anne also worked for the GFG Alliance, an international mining, energy, metal and engineering company, which purchased the Onesteel business and a number of other assets in Australia. In her role as General Manager, Carol-Anne led a transformation program designed to create a more sustainable business that better served the needs of customers.

Since joining Transport for NSW, Carol-Anne has adeptly led her regional team through the challenges presented by COVID-19, demonstrating a clear focus on the health and wellbeing of her team, community and customers. During a time of significant organisational change, she has also unified the various branches of the newly-formed ROM, nurturing a strong culture of resilience, innovation and absolute commitment to delivering the best outcomes for regional customers and communities.
